The case centers on the complex social and environmental challenges that Shell has been facing in the Niger Delta, in politically volatile Nigeria.
The case explores events in Nigeria related to human rights and involving Shell as a corporation, which were a springboard for Shell’s involvement in the development of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in 2002. It focuses on the steps the company has been taking as a lead player in the EITI to tackle problems related to human rights issues, corruption and lack of transparency over oil revenue flows at federal and state government level.
The case further focuses on the power of stakeholder engagement and on the challenges of stakeholder management.
