The purpose of this study is to analyse the existing legal framework on human rights and the environment applicable to European enterprises operating outside the European Union, with a view to contributing to the further operationalisation of the “Protect, Respect, Remedy” framework put forward by the UN Special Representative on Business and Human Rights.

The study complements the UN Framework in that it focuses on European law and EU Member State law applicable to European enterprises operating outside the European Union.

The study extends beyond the UN Framework in that it considers environmental law in addition to/ in conjunction with human rights law.
