The Mission of the Monterey Instititute of International Studies: """"An academic community committed to preparing innovative professionals able to provide leadership in cross-cultural, multilingual environments."""" The concepts of sustainability and social justice are key elements of the mission of the Monterey Institute as it is carried out in our coursework, degree programs offered, and on our campus. The Institute has numerous programs, initiatives and other activities designed to build a socially conscious, environmentally responsible, and economically viable campus and instill these ideals in our students. Some of the examples of these initiatives include:
The Environmental Task Force (ETF) was established in 2002 by then President Chet Haskell. The ETF is made up of professors, a trustee, maintenance staff and students, and develops an integrated environmental strategy for campus. The Monterey Institute became a signatory of the Talloires Declaration in 2002, a declaration by university presidents around the world expressing a committment to creating sustainable campus. Currently, the ETF is part of a standing committee in the Student Council, and actively seeks to increase awareness of environmental issues in the campus community through the following; The Campus Green Initiative, addressing topics such as green building, land stewardship, dining services, toxics and pollutants, resource use, waste minimization and community awareness and education; The Healthy Diet/Healthy Planet, setting goals to have at least 50% of all food items provided by the campus and receptions such as happy hours and graduation, be plant based. We have a formal Earth Day celebration, partnering with local environmental agencies and organizations increasing awareness of environmental issues. The Samson Student Center is a green building incorporating numerous recycled materials, energy saving utility systems, low energy consumptive appliances.
