CSD was established in 1992 to ensure effective follow-up of the United Nations
Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). On the basis of a voluntary
national testing and an expert group consultation, in 2001 a core set of 58 indicators and
methodology sheets were presented and made available for all countries by CSD. This
core set, also called CSD Theme Indicator Framework [CSD, 2001], was developed
starting from a basic list of 134 indicators, that was defined as part of theimplementation of the Work Programme on Indicators of Sustainable Development
(ISDs) adopted by CSD at its Third Session in April 1995.
In 2004 an updated version of the Framework was set up (see Table 1).
